Velpeau says, that after fractures of the femur, there is Do limping unless the shortening exceeds three-quarters of an inch; and the same is true if the shortening occurs in the tibia. The reason is, that the pelvis inclines towards the shorter limb, and thus compensates for the deficiency in length. In speaking of the various contrivances for dressing the fractured femur, he remarks that most of them fail to obviate the shortening, and produce eschars, anchylosis, or troublesome arrests of the circulation. This is the price that is usually paid for the employment of these complicated machines, and a shortening of a quarter to three-quarters of an inch is not avoided after all. The simplest apparatus that will maintain the adjustment of the fractured femur, so that union may take place with shortening of only half an inch, is the best. 1 Nelaton holds the following language: --A fracture of the body of the femur, with an adult, is always a grave accident, inasmuch as it demands so long a confinement to the bed, and especially on account of the shortening of the limb, which it is almost impossible wholly to prevent: accordingly, Boyer recommends to the surgeon, from the first day, to announce to the parents of t. . . Causes of functional central and coarse systemic nerve-disease (tabes e. g. ) that were locally treated as vesical or rectal affections, abound in the personal recollection of neurologists, and all these improper practices were done on the reflex theory. Another phase in the, evolution of the theory of, and practice on, the law of reflex action, illustrating the blending of reality and imagination, truth and fiction, is the relation of ocular defects with certain neuroses. Since it became known that visual abnormalities often accompanied nervous diseases, oculists tried to establish a causal connection between eyeaffections and neuroses, the same as gynecologists, aurists, rhinologists, dentists, etc. , did before. The reflex theory gained here a new field for application. The startling statements of the remarkable results obtained in the treatment of chorea, epilepsy and hystero-epilepsy and neuroses in general by the mere correction of ocular defects called forth the famous inquiry of the Stevens Commission. The investigation ended, as might have been foreseen, like a regular doctors quarrel, or a theologians dispute, each side being more confirmed than ever in the correctness of their respective positions.
