Salome: Tragödie in Einem Akt - Oscar Wilde - Salome ist ein Theaterstück von Oscar Wilde. Ursprünglich auf Französisch geschrieben, wurde es 1896 in Paris uraufgeführt. Wilde hatte das Stück der Schauspielerin Sarah Bernhardt gegeben, die die Produktion leiten wollte, aber zu dieser Zeit mussten in Großbritannien alle Stücke genehmigt werden, und die englische Zensur erlaubte nicht, dass biblische Charaktere auf der Bühne dargestellt wurden. Es wurde in Großbritannien erst 1931 aufgeführt, obwohl es 1905 eine private Aufführung in London gab.Es erzählt die Geschichte von Salomes Versuch, Jochanaan (Johannes der Täufer) zu verführen, ihren Tanz der sieben Schleier vor Herodes, Jochanaans Hinrichtung und den Tod von Salome, wie von Herodes angeordnet. Nachdem sie von dem inhaftierten Jochanaan besessen ist, versucht sie ihn zu verführen, scheitert jedoch, als er entdeckt, dass sie die Tochter von Herodias (der Frau von Herodes) und die Stieftochter von Herodes ist. Der Grund, warum er überhaupt im Gefängnis ist, ist, dass er Herodias beleidigt hat. Oscar (Fingal O'Flahertie Wills) Wilde wurde am 16. Oktober 1854 in Dublin als Sohn des Arztes William Wilde und der Dichterin Jane Francesca Elgee geboren. Er studierte klassische Literatur am Trinity College in Dublin und am Magdalen College in Oxford. 1879 ging er nach London, wo er sich bald durch seinen extravaganten Lebensstil und seine rhetorische Gewandtheit einen Namen machte. Nach Reisen in die USA, nach Kanada und Frankreich arbeitete Wilde zunächst für verschiedene Zeitungen als Lektor und Herausgeber. Seit 1884 mit Constance Lloyd verheiratet, schrieb und veröffentlichte er 1888 für seine eigenen Kinder die Märchensammlung TheHappy Prince and Other Tales. In den folgenden Jahren entstanden weitere Erzählungen (wie The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891) und zahlreiche Bühnenstücke (wie The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895), die außerordentliches literarisches und gesellschaftliches Aufsehen erregten. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Erfolges stürzte ihn dann jedoch der Skandal um das langjährige Verhältnis mit Lord Alfred Douglas in den Ruin. Wilde verlor eine Verleumdungsklage gegen Douglas Vater, der ihn der Sodomie bezichtigt hatte, und wurde selbst in einem Strafprozeß wegen Unzucht zu einer zweijährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Nach seiner Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis in Reading floh er vor der gesellschaftlichen Ächtung unter falschem Namen nach Paris. Völlig mittellos starb er hier am 30. November 1900.

Christian traditions depict her as an icon of dangerous female seductiveness, notably in regard to the dance mentioned in the New Testament, which is thought to have had an erotic element to it, and in some later transformations it has further been iconized as the Dance of the Seven Veils. Other elements of Christian tradition concentrate on her lighthearted and cold foolishness that, according to the gospels, led to John the Baptist&#39 s death. A similar motif was struck by Oscar Wilde in his Salome, in which she plays the role of femme fatale. This parallel representation of the Christian iconography, made even more memorable by Richard Strauss&#39 opera based on Wilde&#39 s work, is as consistent with Josephus&#39 account as the traditional Christian depiction however, according to the Romanized Jewish historian, Salome lived long enough to marry twice and raise several children.
