THE FIRST STAGE. Pierre Pointue, Chantonix, Aug. 20, 1874. HERE we. are, the Frau Mutter, Fanny, and Grace; the two latter en route for the Grands Mulets. The ascent, thus far, which occupied two hours, with the afternoon sun blazing upon us, was somewhat fatiguing, though the Frau Mutter had one mule, and Fanny and Grace another between them. The kindly welcome and the splendid view were ample compensation for all inconveniences encountered on the way, and the glorious sunset, first gilding each mountain top, and then leaving them in grey, mysterious stillness, was something never to be forgotten. One almost felt ones self transported to some legendary world, and expected to see, issuing from the mountain depths, all sorts of strange fantastic forms, imps, cobolds, pixies, gnomes, and c. August 29th. --Once more we take up our narrative, which was abruptly terminated by--shall we confess it--the announcement of supper. It is sad, that in moments of highest, purest exaltation, amidst scenes which call forth ones noblest aspirations, the lower instincts of humanity will make themselves felt, and the magic word supper, has the power of detaching us from the grandest scenery possible. Such was our experience at the Pierre Pointue, on the evening in question. We slept very comfortably, for though our room was even smaller than that at the Montanvert, and had no window, except into the Salle a Manger, the accompaniments were clean, at 28 CROSSING THE GLACIER. any rate, and the beds, though not precisely stuffed with roses, were still free from thorns. Next morning, soon after five, Grace and Fanny, with their two guides, Camille and Charlet, and the porter, Joseph Simond, started for the Grand Mulets; the first hour, their wa. . .
