This work describes a journey during January to July 1906, from Weihaiwei, a Treaty Port situated at the easternmost tip of Shantung Province to Rangoon in Burma, with the purpose of gratifying his own desire to visit those parts of China least known to Europeans, and gain knowledge of the tribes inhabiting Eastern Tibet and Yunnan. The route covered some three to four hundred kilometers, the most difficult parts being the ones described in detail, backed by vivid photographs. Johnston aroused considerable interest as he was accompanied throughout by his pet bull terrier. He visited the sacred Mount Omei in China and the town of Tali-fu near Lake Erh Hai, the center of the Tali Kingdom in the eighth to fourteenth century, which he reported to be a Tai or Shan Kingdom. Johnston entered Burma at Bhamo, enjoying the luxury of British colonial life. His wide reading sets his travel account apart. This fascinating journey details the local traditions and characteristics of China in the early 1900’s. With tales of the mystic monasteries, a 1000 year old monk, and areas not yet open to the modern railway or airplane, Johnston’s writings could easily have been the inspiration for James Hilton’s Lost Horizon. Johnston, who eventually became the tutor to the boy emperor, was district officer and magistrate of Wei-hai-wei, and was well qualified, both linguistically and by travel in other parts of China, to undertake the expedition described in the present work. The ambitious tour was begun in January, 1906, the main object of the author being to explore the principalities of Eastern Tibet that now own allegiance to China, and thence to proceed southwards to Yunnan and Burma. Mr. Johnston’s familiarity with Chinese, and careful study of ethnological and other questions, and of the native literature, invest his notes with special value.
