As recompense, they were paid many fine compli ments, such as being described as the brains of the industry. From the technical point of view, there was even less than the average amount of mental pabulum in the Speeches of Saturday night. His Excellency the governor-general spoke of mining with all the detachment of the classic scholar, the mere mine proprietor, and ex Home Secretary. The. Minister of Mines appeared for the nonce in the unwonted, but none the less welcome, garb of apologist for the industry, its place and importance in the country; and his speech might have. Been a peroration from the chair of the Chamber of Mines or the effort of a leader writer of the capitalist Press. Mr. Chaplin preached from n the all-important text of the identity of interest between the, mining and agricultural communities, and Mr. Esselen painted an inimitable word-picture of the transformation wrought by Rand industry on the dreary waste of veld that had preceded it.
