Is your life rosy? Or, ‘rosy’ but wild? The wisdom to plan one’s life for the long run is needed. Mi-ju has struggled to get a job at a small company in this time of massive youth unemployment. But the work is arduous and she naturally envies her friends who are working for huge well-known conglomerates and even feel inferior to them. So she made snap decision to go a graduate school and visits her old college teacher, Professor Sung, to seek his advice. He has told her that she has to move away from what is immediately in front of her and has to learn to develop a long-term perspective. Then he told her a story that is so fitting for her situation. He said that the rose plant has been raised to produce huge, beautiful flowers but only for a short season, the wild rose plant, however, produce a steady stream of flowers from the late spring to fall. After the short, initial meeting with Professor Sung, Mi-ju has started to think seriously about life. She started to meet her old college friends (whom she had avoided), attended lectures on different topics and began to transform her life. Work became more enjoyable and she was recognized as an excellent worker… The Rose and the Wild Rose is a self-help novel that advises people, who cannot see anything farther than what is immediately in front of them so caught up in the pursuit of success, on the two different paths that could change future. The novel compares the rose and the wild rose to illustrate these two paths. The story of these two plants, in fact, mirrors the life itself. There are those who achieve an early success and coasts along, like the rose, and those who persevere and work at it for a long time and finally become recognized, like the wild rose; the books suggests that neither one is necessarily better than the other, but it talks about the importance of the wisdom to be able to plan for the future for the long-term.
