Windows to Southeast Asia: An Anthology for Critical Reading, Thinking and Writing offers an Asian perspective on political, cultural, social and economic issues that are critical to the region. Such a perspective is much needed in the existing book market which is often dominated by British or US-centric texts. The 60 texts in the Anthology have been selected because they introduce interesting and relevant issues for further research, discussion and analysis. As such, they should not be treated as purely reading comprehension exercises. The collection of texts was selected to include samples of different genres (fiction, poems, newspaper articles, academic essays, comic strips) and an attempt was made to include writers from all the countries of Southeast Asia. The variety of genres in the collection of texts can also provide the teacher with opportunities to discuss differences in communication styles, language use and formats to suit the audience and purpose. Each text starts with a pre-reading activity to prime the reader. Questions which check understanding follow the text. There are also questions which develop greater awareness of stated as well as underlying meanings intended by the writer and questions which enhance the readers appreciation of the literary value of the text. The last section, Explorations, gives suggestions for post-reading activities. These require students to do extended research, analyse data collected and present the data in a range of formats for various stated purposes. The readers are encouraged to explore multiple perspectives and thus, to think critically about these issues in the context of their own countries and the wider world. In so doing, they will sharpen their analytical and critical skills in reading and writing. The collection can be used for tertiary-level Academic English courses and also serves as an essential resource for the GCE A Level General Paper and International Baccalaureate Diploma exam.
