VIII, 184 S. Mit zahlr. farb. Abb. Gebundene Ausgabe mit Schutzumschlag. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Traditional sacred paintings for family and village temples have been produced in many parts of Bali. The sources for the subjects of these paintings are to be found in traditional narrative, legends and fables, not only of indigenous origin, or introduced from neighbouring Java following the Majapahit conquest of Bali in the 14th century, but also, and most importantly, the Mahabharata and Ramayana, the ancient Indian epics brought into the region many hundreds of years earlier. Sacred painting, like Balinese temple sculpture, wayang, dance and music, remains a living, vibrant folk art. Unlike Balinese commercial art, sacred paintings, once they are dedicated in a temple, are believed to possess spiritual power. Yet they are not preserved as 'works of art', but are regarded as craft products made for a specific purpose, and expected to wear out in time. This is one of the explanations for the fact that they have remained little known outside of Bali, despite almost one hundred years of Western scholarly focus on Bali's unique cultural traditions. This important new contribution documents and illustrates the distinctive styles of the different parts of the island where sacred paintings are found -a fascinating aspect of Balinese folk art largely overlooked in past, and, with the relentless pressure of modern tourism on the island's traditions, one perhaps not destined to survive in its present form for much longer. ISBN 9789745240346.
