For instance, Matiana, now in her eighties, touchingly remembers how she was married and widowed before she had reached her seventeenth birthday. This dual technique is superbly handled, so that people and events have both a vivid actuality and an inner richness of meaning. Agustin Yañez, internationally known as one of Mexico´s greatest novelists, has published six novels and a number of volumes of stories, along with two biographies and other works of non-fiction. In addition to his distinguished literary career he has played significant roles as educator, scholar, and public servant. Between 1953 and 1959 he was governor of his native state, Jalisco. At the present time he is Secretary of Public Education in the national government. Canadian-born Ethel Brinton, the translator, studied under Yañez and is now Director of Studies at the Anglo-Mexican Institute in Mexico City.
