She speaks of a childhood in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, and a life under a strict and conservative Confucianist who was surprisingly progressive when it came to education. She recalls vivid details of her childhood home in Hong Kong, her sister's marriage in the 1920s, New Year celebrations in the Big House in Kuala Lumpur, and the family's flight to India when the Japanese invaded Malaya in 1941. This is the life of one of the storied, old-school Chinese businessmen who helped make this country what it is today. But most of all, it is the life of a son, a husband, a father and a pillar of his community. About the author CHAN KING NUI, a second-generation Malaysian Chinese, was born in Hong Kong. She attended Raffles College in 1939 and took up teaching in her alma mater, the Senior Methodist Girls School in Kuala Lumpur, in 1948. She worked briefly for the Malayan Film Unit and, later, a factory in Ipoh. She returned to teaching in 1969, and has taught in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Brunei.
