Aharon Ariel Lavi grew up in a secular Israeli household in the northern town of Kiryat Tiv'on. Following high school, Lavi completed a year of community service with the HaNo'ar HaOved VeHaLomed youth movement, and entered the Nahal unit of the military. He is currently pursuing a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science at Bar-Ilan University, and this year he is a Tikvah Fund Fellow in New York City. Today he is considered a ba'al teshuvah (a formerly secular Jew who has returned to faith), and contributes his professional background and social activism to benefit mission-driven communities and social businesses throughout Israel. Lavi is a member of the Hasidic ecological community in Moshav Shuva in the Negev, and is the founder of Netti'ot, an organization that helps integrate Ba'alei-Teshuva and Haredim into modern Israeli society. It is there that Lavi joined forces with the Rakee'a project, a one-of-a-kind curriculum that incorporates the study of mathematics and science into Torah study. These two disciplines are introduced into Haredi education in order to improve graduates' capacity to attain full employment.
