Dwa statki – HMS Erebus i HMS Terror – pod dowództwem doświadczonego żeglarza, sir Johna Franklina, wyruszyły ku północnym wybrzeżom Kanady, celem poszukiwania Przejścia Północno-Zachodniego. To ciąg przesmyków pomiędzy wyspami Archipelagu Arktycznego, gdzie od kilkuset już lat, kosztem wielu istnień ludzkich, szukano możliwości opłynięcia Ameryki Północnej, chcąc zaoszczędzić na odległości przemierzanej drogą morską pomiędzy wybrzeżami Atlantyku i Pacyfiku. Na statkach zgromadzono spore zapasy żywności, które w teorii miały wystarczyć na około pięć lat. Wyposażono je w silniki, konieczne do przebijania się przez lód, i zapas węgla.
