First edition in Russian, the first translation to any language of "Das Kapital". First edition points include comma in table of contents for p.73 and an 'e' at the end of line 40, p. 65. Arguably, the most influential text of the 19th century whose impact continues to be felt today. "Amongst the most influential pieces of writing in world history" (International Institute of Social History). Marx expounded his major scientific discovery: the principle of the dual nature of work, consisting of the product, the famous theory of surplus value ( value ), the rationale of the materialist conception of history and trends of capitalist accumulation. Because of the unexpected popularity of the book, and the subsequent ban in the 1890s, this edition of 3000 copies was soon exhausted within a year and the book became very rare. The German translation took 5 years to sell 1000 copies. Later, Marx noted the excellence of the Russian translation. In 1880, he wrote to F.A. Sorge saying that of all countries, the "Capital" had been read and appreciated most fully in Russia. Skillfully rebound by Green Dragon Bindery to match the non descript binding that was originally on this copy of the book, new endpapers and minimal paper touch ups on the half title, which is present in this copy. A previous owner has scratched out their name (not a book one would want their name in in late 19th c. Russia) and is remarkably clean and bright through out. An exceptional copy for this fragile and important title. With a custom clam shell protective case. Private seller located in California.
