Conosciuto dal grande pubblico come uno dei maestri della letteratura umoristica del Novecento, su Achille Campanile questa etichetta non rende pienamente giustizia della ricchezza di una prolificissima produzione libraria. Pervasa da un senso innato del paradosso e del rovesciamento, basato sull'assoluta normalità e letteralità delle cose, l'opera di Campanile proprio per questo lascia ampio spazio all'avventura e al colpo di scena. E se a volte può succedere che l'autore, nelle sue riflessioni più profonde, rinunci al registro del comico, non abbandona invece mai il gusto per l'azione avventurosa, che nasce dalle caratteristiche stesse dei suoi personaggi. È quello che succede nei due romanzi brevi raccolti in questo volume: Chiarastella, pubblicato nel 1934, e Trac-trac-puf, uscito nel 1956. Il primo racconta le mirabolanti avventure di Chiarastella, lo spirito dell'avventura in carne e ossa, che viaggia per mari e continenti facendo tutti i mestieri; il secondo è una fiaba per adulti (e piccini) che narra le peripezie del principe Tano, in cerca della Bell'Unica Fuor del Mondo per farla sua sposa. Due testi che nonostante l'apparente semplicità e il ricorso a forme letterarie note – il racconto di viaggio e la fiaba – sono veri e propri manifesti letterari per le sperimentazioni e le invenzioni che contengono.
