387 p. Half Cloth with dustjacket. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, sonst sehr guter Zustand / dust jacket rubbed, otherwise very good condition. - “There is but one truly serious philosophical problem,” wrote Albert Camus, “and that is suicide.” According to Georges Minois, the complexity of the problem is reflected in Western culture’s contradictory and ambivalent attitudes toward the subject. Cato, Cleopatra, and Samson were heroic in taking their own lives; Judas, Brutus, and Achitophel were cowards. Willing martyrs, when the cause is right, become patriots or saints, but the bridge jumper is a deranged and pathetic figure on the nightly news. In his illuminating history, Georges Minois examines how a culture’s attitudes about suicide reflect its larger beliefs and values—perspectives on life and death, duty and honor, pain and pleasure. Minois addresses a wide range of questions drawn from theology, law, literature, science, and medicine. Under what circumstances has suicide been honored or condemned? On what grounds, if any, can it be justified? Under what conditions do suicides increase or decrease? Does legislation make any difference? Does religion? How does the historical record disclose or obscure suicides? Minois begins his survey with classical Greece and Rome, where suicide was acceptable, even heroic, under some circumstances. With the rise of Christianity, however, suicide was unequivocally condemned as “self-murder” and an insult to God, who alone had the right to give and take life. Minois examines how St. Augustines teaching on the subject came to dominate the Early Church, and comments on medieval prac- trees such as confiscating the estate and hanging the corpse of the person who committed suicide. With the Renaissance and its renewed interest in classical culture, suicide reemerged as a philosophical issue. Minois finds examples of changing perspectives in texts by Bacon, Montaigne, Sidney, Donne, and Shakespeare, whose question "To be, or not to be?” signaled the return of a more ambivalent view of suicide and a more open discussion of its meaning. That fifty-two of Shakespeares characters kill themselves, Minois observes, suggests how dramatically attitudes had changed by the time of the English Renaissance. By 1700, the term suicide had replaced the term self-murder in popular idiom, and the subject began to interest the emerging scientific disciplines. Minois explores the characterization of suicide as the “English malady,” describing Robert Burton's early medical considerations of the subject. He follows the reevaluation of suicide through the Enlightenment and the Romantic periods. And he examines developments emerging from nineteenth- and twentiethcentury science, law, philosophy, and literature which made it possible for a writer such as Camus to place the issue of suicide at the heart of modern philosophy. Minois concludes with comments on the most recent turn in this long and complex history—the emotional debate over euthanasia, assisted suicide, and the right to die. / CONTENTS Introduction Part I • Tradition: A Repressed Question 1 Suicide in the Middle Ages: Nuances 2 The Legacy of the Middle Ages: Between Madness and Despair 3 The Classical Heritage: Perfecting the Timely Exit Part II • The Renaissance: A Question Raised, Then Stifled 4 The Early Renaissance: Rediscovery of the Enigma of Suicide 5 To Be or Not to Be: The First Crisis of Conscience in Europe 6 The Seventeenth Century: Reaction and Repression 7 Substitutes for Suicide in the Seventeenth Century Part III • The Enlightenment: Suicide Updated and Guilt-Free 8 The Birth of the English Malady, 1680—1720 9 The Debate on Suicide in the Enlightenment: From Morality to Medicine 10 The Elite: From Philosophical Suicide to Romantic Suicide 11 The Common People: The Persistence of Ordinary Suicide Epilogue: From the French Revolution to the Twentieth Century, or, From Free Debate to Silence Notes Bibliography Index. americas, europe, gerontology, history, humanities, politics and social sciences, social sciences, specific demographics, textbooks, world, History of Old Age is the first major study of the ways in which old age has been perceived in western culture throughout history. Georges Minois paints a vast fresco, starting with the first old man to relate his own story-an Egyptian scribe some 4500 years ago-and ending with the deaths of Elizabeth I and Henry IV in the sixteenth century. Tracing the changing conceptions of the nature, value, and burden of the old, Minois argues that western history during this period is marked by great fluctuation in the social and political role of the aged.Minois shows how, in ancient Greece, the cult of youth and beauty on the one hand, and the reverence for the figure of the Homeric sage, on the other, created an ambivalent attitude toward the aged. This ambiguity appears again in the contrast between the active role that older citizens played in Roman politics and their depiction in satirical literature of the period. Christian literature in the Middle Ages also played a large part in defining society's perception of the old, both in the image of the revered holy sage and in the total condemnation of the aged sinner.Drawing on literary texts throughout, Minois considers the interrelation of literary, religious, medical, and political factors in determining the social fate of the elderly and their relationship to society. This book will be of great interest to social and cultural historians, as well as to general readers interested in the subject of the age.
