The cockroach (eBook, PDF)

The Cockroach, a bitter Brexit-era fable by Ian McEwan, reframes political power as a grotesque metamorphosis, turning Jim Sams into a literal cockroach who wields populist authority with gleeful indiscretion. McEwan renders a satirical landscape where rhetoric eclipses reality, and the will of the people is bent to the appetite of a single coercive appetite. The prose moves with a brisk, merciless wit, puncturing the rituals of governance while revealing the vacuity and vanity that fuel populist fervor. Through Sams's gnawing cunning and unembarrassed pragmatism, the novel dissects the mechanics of power, media spectacle, and the performative nature of leadership. The transformation serves as a relentless allegory: the closer one is to power, the more one loses the ability to distinguish between ideology and appetite. McEwan's satire is precise in its misrule, exposing how language can hollow out consent and replace it with compliance. In its finales, the work leaves a chilling question about accountability, asking whether democracy can survive when its most fundamental instruments—truth and consequence—are rendered grotesque. The Cockroach thus stands as a lucid, unsettling polar star in McEwan's catalog of moral investigation, a compact indictment of modern political culture.^*
