Excerpt: 'Jim Gilmore came to Hortons Bay from Canada. He bought the blacksmith shop from old man Horton. Jim was short and dark with big mustaches and big hands. He was a good horseshoer and did not look much like a blacksmith even with his leather apron on. He lived upstairs above the blacksmith shop and took his meals at A. J. Smith’s. Liz Coates worked for Smith’s. Mrs. Smith, who was a very large clean woman, said Liz Coates was the neatest girl she’d ever seen. Liz had good legs and always wore clean gingham aprons and Jim noticed that her hair was always neat behind. He liked her face because it was so jolly but he never thought about her. Liz liked Jim very much. She liked it the way he walked over from the shop and often went to the kitchen door to watch for him to start down the road. She liked it about his mustache. She liked it about how white his teeth were when he smiled. She liked it very much that he didn’t look like a blacksmith. She liked it how much A. J. Smith and Mrs. Smith liked Jim. One day she found that she liked it the way the hair was black on his arms and how white they were above the tanned line when he washed up in the washbasin outside the house. Liking that made her feel funny.'.

Language: English. Brand new Book. 2021 Reprint of the 1925 Edition. The stories' themes - of alienation, loss, grief, separation - continue the work Hemingway began with the vignettes, which include descriptions of acts of war, bullfighting and current events. The collection is known for its spare language and oblique depiction of emotion, through a style known as Hemingway's "theory of omission." Critics have long recognized In Our Time as a major development in American literature and Modernism. Edmund Wilson, in one of the first reviews, gave the collection high praise and wrote that Hemingway "almost invented a form of his own". In Wilson's view, the book was a break-through with "more artistic dignity than anything else about the period of the war that has as yet been written by an American." Now recognized as one of the most original short story collections in twentieth-century literature, In Our Time provides a key to Hemingway's later works. In Our Time is Ernest Hemingway's first collection of short stories, published in 1925 by Boni & Liveright, New York. Its title is derived from the English Book of Common Prayer, "Give peace in our time, O Lord". The collection's publication history was complex. It began with six prose vignettes commissioned by Ezra Pound for a 1923 edition of The Little Review; Hemingway added twelve more and in 1924 compiled the in our time edition (with a lower-case title), which was printed in Paris. To these were added fourteen short stories for the 1925 edition, including "Indian Camp" and "Big Two-Hearted River", two of his best-known Nick Adams stories. He composed "On the Quai at Smyrna" for the 1930 edition. Our edition reprints the 1925 Edition by Boni & Liveright. Books.

The literary debut that made Hemingway famous is also one of the most original short story collections of twentieth-century America.  In Our Time is a landmark collection of short fiction, heralding the appearance of one of American literature’s greatest writers: the author of For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Sun Also Rises, and other classic novels. In Our Time includes the famous Nick Adams stories “Indian Camp,” “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife,” “The Three Day Blow,” and “The Battler,” among others.   Written in Hemingway’s “fibrous and athletic” language, the “items which make up the collection of In Our Time are not so much short stories, in the accepted meaning, as preludes to a mood, composed with accurate and acute finesse to converge in the mind of the reader. Mr. Hemingway is oblique, inferential, suggestive rather than overt, explicit, explanatory. His people and events emerge with miraculous suddenness and inevitability out of a timeless paradise of their own, to intimate their own especial and intrinsic incongruities and ironies and pathos out of an illimitable fabric of comedies and tragedies” (The New York Times).

THIS COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES AND VIGNETTES MARKED ERNEST HEMINGWAY'S AMERICAN DEBUT AND MADE HIM FAMOUS When In Our Time was published in 1925, it was praised by Ford Madox Ford, John Dos Passos, and F. Scott Fitzgerald for its simple and precise use of language to convey a wide range of complex emotions, and it earned Hemingway a place beside Sherwood Anderson and Gertrude Stein among the most promising American writers of that period. In Our Time contains several early Hemingway classics, including the famous Nick Adams stories Indian Camp, The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife, The Three Day Blow, and The Battler, and introduces readers to the hallmarks of the Hemingway style: a lean, tough prose — enlivened by an car for the colloquial and an eye for the realistic that suggests, through the simplest of statements, a sense of moral value and a clarity of heart. Now recognized as one of the most original short story collections in twentieth-century literature, In Our Time provides a key to Hemingway's later works.
