Shortly before we assumed the duty of proofreading and editing this dictionary, our colleague and friend Uwe Carls had just passed away. During his last weeks, we discussed with him, at some point, the possibility of publishing his manuscript. Later in 2012, after having examined the manuscript, the three of us decided, in close contact with Uwe Carls' family, to take on the task of completing work on the dictionary. The challenge was not only to develop a general editing policy. Although the three of us were well familiar with lexicographic work from our parallel dictionary project on another variety, i.e. English in West Africa, the task also included the need to upgrade our ranges of expertise in this specialised field. What is the history behind this dictionary? Uwe Carls' acquaintance with India and Indian English began in 1978, when he commenced several months of research at the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in Hyderabad, which is now The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU). This period of research gave rise to some of his earlier publications concerning Indian English and the changing status of English in India. It also intensified Uwe's acquaintance with Harry Spitzbardt, who had at the time been working and teaching at CIEFL for a long period of time and who, as a pioneer in the field, had already published on language planning and English in India. Uwe's work on Indian English received new impetus when a larger project on varieties of the English language was started at Humboldt University Berlin in 1984, led by Klaus Hansen.
