He worked for several years in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry before starting his own consultancy, BCNP Consultants, with headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. According to his background in polymer chemistry he got responsibility as a project manager for producing starch polymers by biocatalysis and furthermore to find new applications for these well defined biopolymers. He learned quickly that a project manager needs aside his own expertise experts from different fields, i.e. genetic engineering, fermentation, micro biology, marketing, economy. Scientific interdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity beyond natural sciences are a key success factors to develop new products and to bring them successfully to the market. This story holds also true in the consulting practice of BCNP standing for biotech, chemistry, nanotech, pharma. The serie of Compasses to Europe´s Innovative Chemical Companies was motivated by the observation that quite often one speaks about company founding and entrepreneurship in the context of biotechnology and nanotechnoloy, but not about innovative chemical companies; even if chemical substances and processes are in the focus of the technology considered: This compass aims at bringing all interested parties to the table. Co-author is Dr. Georg F.L. Wießmeier, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of Sibelco Group, Belgium, and presidium member of the German Chemical Society. The two-page portraits have been written by authors of the corresponding organizations. Holger Bengs, Herausgeber und Autor, studierte Chemie und Betriebswirtschaft. Er arbeitete einige Jahre in der chemisch-pharmazeutischen Industrie bevor er seine eigene Unternehmensberatung, BCNP Consultants, mit Sitz in Frankfurt am Main startete. Auf der Basis seiner Ausbildung zum Polymerchemiker erhielt er die Verantwortung als Projektleiter für die Produktion neuer Stärkemoleküle mit Enzymen und das Auffinden neuer Anwendungen für diese gut definierten Biopolymere. Er lernte schnell, dass ein Projektleiter neben seinem eigenen Wissen auch die Erfahrung von Experten verschiedener Disziplinen benötigt, etwa in der Genetik, Fermentation, Mikrobiologie, Marketing und Wirtschaft. Wissenschaftliche Interdisziplinarität und Interdisziplinarität, die darüber hinaus geht sind Schlüsselfaktoren, um neue Produkte zu entwickeln und diese am Markt einzuführen. Dies bewahrheitet sich auch in der Beratungspraxis von BCNP, das für die Branchen Biotech, Chemie, Nanotech und Pharma steht.
