Hier liegt ein Fotobuch vor, das unser Land, die Menschen, ihre Umgebung, ihr Tun und Lassen einzufangen versucht. Poetisch und realistisch zugleich. Der Fotograf Ernst Fretz wurde auf die Reise geschickt, den Winter in der Schweiz mit dem Objektiv festzuhalten. Nicht den Winter, wie er sich auf Postkarten und Kalenderblättern präsentiert. Am Rande durfte und konnte Fretz natürlich auch auf solche Bilder nicht verzichten. Er wollte aber den Schweizer Winter auch nüchtern, kühl, kalt und unsentimental zeigen. Und das, was der Winter bei uns bewirkt. Da sind Städte, die durch zehn Zentimeter Neuschnee lahmgelegt werden, da sind Menschen in Gebirgstälern, denen Wege plötzlich abgeschnitten sind. Da gibt es andrerseits Brauchtum, überliefert seit Jahrhunderten, das verknüpft ist mit dieser Zeit des späten Erwachens und der frühen Dämmerung. Es gibt die trauliche Wärme in den Stuben, in denen man an langen Abenden zusammenrückt, redet, bei einem Glas Wein und im Stumpenrauch, da gibt es Feste, die man freundlich feiert, die leben, allein leben vom wohligen Gefühl des Geborgenseins drinnen - vom eisig pfeifenden Wind draussen. Winterland Schweiz ist ein Buch, das Stimmung zu zaubern versucht. Dabei soll der Schnee nicht sanft zudecken, was zu verstecken vorteilhafte Image-Pflege wäre wer den Band liest und betrachtet, darf ruhig sehen, wie da und dort atemberaubende Schönheit und beklemmende Ernüchterung Hand in Hand gehen. Die Bilder werden ergänzt durch Texte von Max Rüeger, den einzelnen Kapiteln vorgegliedert und als jeweilige Einführung zur fotografischen Szenenabfolge gedacht. Il parle aussi des fetes, dont onjouit avec joie et serenite et quivivent du sentiment bienfaisant de se sentir au chaud et choye - a I'abri du vent glacial qui souffle au dehors. Winterland Schweiz est un ouvrage qui cree la magie de I'ambiance. La neige ne doit pas y recouvrir doucement ce qui serait defavorable a I'image du pays. Celui qui lit et contemple ce livre peut voir sans autre comme la beaute sublime qui arrete pour un instant la respiration cötoie de tres pres la banalite desillusionnante. Les images sont completees par des textes de Max Rüeger, places en tete des divers chapitres et concus comme introduction des differentes scenes photographiques qui suivent. Ernst Fretz, the young Swiss photographer, was despatched with intructions to capture winter in Switzerland with his camera - not just the winter depicted on postcards and calendars. He could, of course, not entirely ignore the sunny aspect ofthe Swiss winter, but he was at pains to show it in its true colours - austere, harsh and unsentimental- and to illustrate what winter really does to Switzerland and the Swiss. He shows towns paralyzed by ten centirnetres of snow, people in mountain valleys abruptly cut offfrom the rest of the world ... His photographs also portray the ageold customs so closely linked with this season oflate sunrises and early sunsets. With his photographs Ernst Fretz evokes the familiar warmth ofhome where the long winter evenings draw people closer together over a glass of wine, in a com- fortable haze of tobacco smoke. And he has caught the atmosphere of the special days, cordially celebrated, that owe their very existence to the need everyone feels for a sense of warmth and security against the icy cold outside. Winterland Schweiz is a book which deliberately sets out to conjure up atmosphere. But there is no attempt this time to make the snow cover things it might, on the whole, be politic to keep concealed. The reader is at liberty to see how, here and there, breathtaking beauty goes hand in hand with throat-constricting austerity.
