68 pages. A rare portfolio of gravure photographs, in sepia, of the people and buildings of ancient Jerusalem, with text by Nachum T Gidal, 1909-1996, also known as Tim Gidal. The contents are as folows: A 24-page bound book by Gidal, containing a brief history of Jerusalem, illustrated with B&W photographs. 44 fine gravure photographs, some example of which are shown. None of the photographs are titled, but all are reproduced with full captions in reduced format in the book. Most of these photographs were from the Gidal collection, and include many rare and very historic views of Jerusalem such as the oldest existing photograph of the city taken in 1849, and an early photograph of the Wailing Wall, taken in 1857. Please note that the platen of our scanner is not big enough for the whole of the image to be shown. The four images here are: 1) The title label on the front cover of the box. 2) The earliest photograph of the Wailing Wall showing people, photographed by Robertson, Beato and Co in 1857. 3) A fine study of Yemenite Rabbis studying the Talmud, taken by Moses Ephraim Lilien, 1906. 4) Bukharian-Jewish girls in their festive dresses, also photographed by Moses Ephraim Lilien in 1906. All text in German. All the text and photographic pages are in Fine condition, all contained in the original black cloth box-portfolio, with title label on the front cover. The box is lightly worn and marked, with the cloth torn in place In all. Size: Folio - over 15" - 23" Tall.
