In 1847 his parents returned to Berlin. A few years later his father accepted the position as ambassador at Athens and subsequently at Constantinople. In his twelfth year von Wildenbruch returned to Germany with his mother to continue his edu cation at the Paedagogium at Halle-OU the-saale and the French Gymnasium at Berlin. He left this latter school in order to enter a military academy (kadettenkorps) in Potsdam. In 1861 he became an officer of the First Guards. In 1865 he resigned his commission as officer in the regular army, although he subsequently participated in the campaigns of 1866 and 1870. He resumed his studies in the Gymnasium Burg near Magdeburg, then studied law at the University of Berlin and entered the civil service.
