The Russian Federation is at the same time a country of 'Big Cities', 'New Cities'and multiple capitals of individual federal states. The development of its cities reflects the development of the country as a whole and the evolution of its economy and culture in particular. The authors, Profs. Lappo (Moscow) and Hönsch (Leipzig) present a concise synthesis and discussion of typological characteristics and regional processes governing urbanization of the former USSR. Die Autoren erläutern historische, typologische und regionale Zusammenhänge der Urbanisierung Rußlands. Sie übermitteln darüber hinaus erste Effekte, die sich aus den gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen der neunziger Jahre ergeben haben. So stoppten der Zerfall der Sowjetunion und der Übergang zur Marktwirtschaft das scheinbar unaufhaltsame Wachstum der großen Städte.
