New York City, NY: Vintage Contemporaries, 1993. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Vintage Contemporaries, 1993. Softcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 157 pages. Collection of short stories. The first appearance of the title in this edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent printings of the same title, particularly the edition that was included with the film adaptation on Criterion DVD. Published posthumously as a softcover original and as the "Film Tie-In" Edition to Robert Altman's great film, "Short Cuts". The First Edition is now scarce. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Introduction by Robert Altman. Short stories and poem by Raymond Carver. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Raymond Carver's "Short Cuts". Widely considered to be a fine poet and the greatest American short-story writer of the 20th century, Raymond Carver was probably the writer Robert Altman had been looking for all his film-making life. After reading his work on a long plane trip, Altman decided to make a film of it. The resulting three-and-a-half-hour film beautifully captures Carver's wry, matter-of-fact, and laconic evocation of American desolation and angst, as adapted by Altman into his own unique multi-narrative style, where the individual stories of characters who have no relation to one another are told in bits and pieces that eventually culminate in their meshing together with seamless grace and cumulative power. The honor and prestige of working with a director of Altman's stature were enough to make some of the most celebrated Hollywood names agree to appear in the film for virtually nothing. An absolute "must-have" title for Raymond Carver collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few copies of the First Edition Thus/First Printing still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: Almost all other copies of the edition available online are subsequent printings. A scarce copy thus. Raymond Carver's "Where I'm Calling From" was selected by the panel of New York Times writers, critics, and editors as one of the Top 20 most important works of American fiction of the last 25 years, the only short story collection in the list. One of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. A flawless copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER RAYMOND CARVER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0679748644.
