Large numbers of text-books have been written to supply the material needed for this purpose, but few of them have been able to vindicate their practicability when put to the test in the classroom, and there is probably not one, at least as the writer is aware of, that has become as popular in this field as Paul Bercy's Le Francais Pratique among the teachers and students of French. The excellent results reached by those who have used it in their classes have created a demand for a German text-book constructed on the same plan. This the present work is designed to supply. Der Praktische Deutsche is by no means a mere translation of Paul Bercy's book. The original plan has been preserved, but the exercises reconstructed and fitted to the particular needs of the students of German. The aim has been to provide the material necessary to enable the learner to converse with Germans in their language, and to arrange it in such an order that the study will be pleasurable as well as profitable The book does not claim to contain a complete grammatical treatise, nor is it intended for self-instruction. We have confined ourselves to the most necessary rules of grammar and such other points as will prepare the Student for probable ulterior studies of a higher character.
