Excerpt from German American Annals, Vol. 4: A Quarterly To The Comparative Study Of The Literary, Linguistic And Other Cultural Relations Of Germany And America The diaries (Tagebücher) kept by German officers and privates of the so-called Hessian Auxiliaries in the American Revolution have become a valuable source of accurate contemporaneous information concerning the part which the Germans took in that conflict. Copies of the most important of these diaries have been used by Washington Irving, Bancroft and later historians in their work, and lists of the titles of such sources have been published (Rosengarten, Sources). In one instance an attempt has been made in America to publish the German original of one of the most important of these diaries, viz. that of Dohla (Rattermann, Tagebuch von Joh. Konread Döhla, Deutsch-Amerikanisches Magazin I, Nos 14, 1886). Nevertheless, so far, these original documents have remained, for the most part, unprinted, either in the original manuscripts or in later copies. Even before the diary of Dohla was all printed the magazine above mentioned suspended publication. The text of Wiederholdt's Tgebuch here published, is from a manuscript copy, now in the possession of Mr. J. G. Rosengarten, who has kindly allowed it to be printed.
