They were composed for the use of veterinary surgeons and other officers, who, although well acquainted with the management of horses in the British Islands, must necessarily be at a disadvantage when first placed in charge of them in a different country, where the food, methods of sheltering, and climate are very different from those at home. Considerable numbers of horses in India are annually lost or rendered inefficient through causes which might be avoided; and the author, having served in that country twelve years, admits that, for some time after arriving there, his own want of local knowledge prevented him from adopting many precautions which subsequent experience showed to be advisable-, for preserving horses in the fullest health and vigour.
