Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...sadder or more beautiful exists in India than the deserted city of Fathpur Sikri. There it stands, some twenty-three miles from Agra, much as it stood three hundred years ago, when Akbar decreed the stately pleasure-house. It was built to commemorate the blessing of the holy Salim Cliishti, the hermit who dwelt among the wild beasts in his cave at Sikri, and who had foretold that Akbar's son, born on that spot, should live to succeed him on his splendid throne. The saint did not foresee that the infant would grow up into that unmitigated debaucliee Jeliangir, whose orgies amazed Sir Thomas Roe and whose potent liquor caused that virtuous ambassador to sneeze incontinently, to the delight of the wholc court. But the heroic toper did not defile his fatlier's palace city, which must have been deserted soon after its founder's death; for when William Finch visited it in 1610 he found it " riiinate, lying like a waste district, and very dangerous to pass through at night." Ruinate it has remained ever since, desolate and abandoned. Nu later ruler of India has ever dared to live in Akbar's Versailles, just as no ruler of India has ever climbed to the heights of Akbar's genius. In the empty palaces, the wonderful mosque, the sacred tomb, the baths, the lake, at every turn we recogniic some memory of the greatest of Indian Emperors. Ve may even enter his bedroom--tlie Khwabgali, or " Abode of Dreams"----and see the very screens of beautiful stone tracery, the very Persian couplets, the identical decoration in gold and ultramarine, upon which Akbar feasted his eyes during the long sultry afternoons of the Indian plains. Ve may walk into _the houses of Faizi and Abu-l-Fazl, the laureate and the... Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...mediseval buildings must he more or less respectable in respect of acoustic properties. Some mediaaval churches were indisputably models of acoustic excellence; others, models of acoustic deficiency." Ve nearly all fall under his lash, Churchman and Dissenter alike receiving castigation:. "All Saints', Margaret Street, and St. Alban's, Holborn.... possess acoustic properties of a satisfactory character. They stand alone in this respect, St. Andrew's, Vel1s Street--a church celebrated for the excellence of its choir--being architecturally feeble and acoustically atrocious.... They are ugly and cacophonous. Nor have the Nonconformists eclipsed us. Mr. Newman Hall's pretentious tabernacle boasts an efiective exterior, with a gloomy. cold interior, utterly destitute of the grace of congruity. Dr. Parker's Temple is light and bright, well adapted, moreover, to his form of worship, and acoustically perfect--for preaching pnrposes--but architecturally it may be styled a facade concealing a concert-room." The main contention of his article is that churches which are good acoustically for oratory are least suited for music, and he instances Magdalen Chapel as a most striking example, attributing the peculiar excellence of this building to its 1'-shaped plan--choir and transepts, without a nave, and without aisles. Westmintcr Abbey and Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, are cited as unacouslic. The reverend writer has the courage of his convictions, and says: "For my own part, were I called upon to erect a church on acoustic lines I should imitate the plan of Mayence Cathedral, and place the organ behind a magnificent rercdos at the extreme east end. My church should be 'I'-shaped, as was Bristol... Paperback, Label: RareBooksClub.com, RareBooksClub.com, Product group: Book, Published: 2013-09-13, Studio: RareBooksClub.com.
