(Smith, Elder, and Co. ) In the history of modern Europe there are few chapters more difficult and confusing than that which records the struggle of the Greeks for independence. And it was a chapter which wanted writing. For the student proper there are Finlay, Gordon, and Professor Holland among English writers, and among Germans Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and the elaborate apologia of Karon von Prokesch-Osten. But we know of no work within moderate compass, accessible to and suitable for the ordinary reader, which will at all compare with Mr. Alison Phillips volume. Mr. Phillips makes no pretensions to original research; but he has made excellent use of the secondary authorities, and has produced a work which we can heartily commend to those who want a clear and singularly impartial account of the first War of Greek Independence. The fates have in one sense been far from kind to Mr. Phillips enterprise. Had the work appeared a year ago, it might have become the book of the hour. It will still be read by all who desire the material upon which to base a right judgment on the events of the last year--who look to history as the only safe guide to politics; but for the moment the Greeks have, by political levity, by military mismanagement, and by administrative corruption, brought confusion and consternation upon their friends. To enthusiastic Philhellenes Mr. Phillips admirable book will not be all easy reading.
