The concepts of realism and myth have guided writers and fascinated critical theorists throughout history. What is the relationship between these two views of the world as they appear in literature? Gregory L. Lucente's answer to this question challenges traditional analyses. In the Narrative of Realism and Myth, he examines works by Sicilian novelist Giovanni Verga, D. H. Lawrence, William Faulkner, and Cesare Pavese, revealing a complex series of relations among components of realistic and mythic discourse. Throughout, Lucente's inquiry demonstrates the inseparability of realism and myth, rather than the innate incompatibility suggested by many scholars. to place his argument in the proper context, Lucente provides a critical rereading of approaches to myth and realism from the ancient Greeks to the 20th century. By coming to grips with historical precedent, he constructs a theoretical model for reading 19th- and 20th-century narrative that is both innovative and enduring. The practical usefulness of this theory is demonstrated through a reading of Verga's novella "La Lupa". Finally, Lucente brings his innovative style of literary and social analysis to bear on longer narratives, by Verga, Lawrence, Faulkner, and Pavese. These authors, he feels, represent a historical progression through the assumptions, techniques, and strategies of 20th century European and American realism. More importantly, however, their works clearly demonstrate an interaction of realistic and mythic components within an essentially realistic framework. The Narrative of Realism and Myth illuminates the ways in which modern authors view their world and how those views shape the representation of "reality" in their fictions. Its conclusions will impress anyone interested in the way narrative works, in questions of iconography and the limits of representation, or in literary theory.
