Riots in Oxford culminating in the unjust execution of three students just because they lived in die same house as a murderer led to masters and students leaving that City to seek other places where they might teach and study. Some went to Reading, some to Maidstone and some to Cambridge, and though many returned to Oxford within a few years when all was peaceful again, enough stayed in Cambridge to provide a nucleus of teachers to attract more students and thus establish the town's reputation as a seat of learning. There is but scant information relating to the period before the founding of the colleges, and all that is known is that a University granting a licence to teach came into being. The first recorded Chancellor at Cambridge was Hugh de Hottun, elected in or before 1246. Peterhouse was the first college to come into existence it was founded in the late thirteenth century by Hugh de Balsham, Bishop of Ely. By 1475 there were twelve colleges in existence, and by the Reformation fifteen. Long before the advent of the University, Cambridge had become a town of importance. The age-old trackways of Britain crossed the river at Cambridge on the route between Wessex and Norfolk which utilised the sparsely vegetated crest of the chalk downs that run diagonally across southern England. The Romans recognised the importance of this route and built a fort to protect the river-crossing. Around the fort a settlement grew up and by the time of the Norman Conquest this had become a busy market town. Lange vorher schon hatte Cambridge Bedeutung erlangt denn hier führte ein stark benutzter Handelsweg zwischen Wessex und Norfolk über die Cam. Wegen der Bedeutung dieser Route sicherten die Römer den Flußübergang durch ein Fort. Darum herum wuchs eine Siedlung, und zur Zeit der normannischen Eroberung war daraus eine geschäftige Handelsstadt geworden.
