Putting the Record Straight: The Autobiography of (1982)
ISBN: 9780670583263 bzw. 067058326X, in Englisch, The Viking Press, New York, New York, U.S.A. gebundenes Buch, gebraucht, Erstausgabe, mit Einband.
Von Händler/Antiquariat, Argyl Houser, Bookseller [54812257], Altadena, CA, U.S.A.
Near-Fine condition 2nd printing hardcover in Fine condition dust jacket. Book has just two flaws distinguishing it from Fine condition: the upper left corner of the back cover is just ever-so-slightly bumped and the outer page edges show some dust soiling. All else looks just like new. The dust jacket is in As-New condition. "When John Culshaw joined the classical music staff of Decca Records in London shortly after the Second World War, recording was in its infancy. He was one of the first people to see the vast new possibilities opened up with the advent of long-playing records and high fidelity, as well as stereo, and during his twenty years with Decca he produced many pioneering recordings, including the first complete Ring cycle (in stereo) and Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. But this memoir is more than an account of the growth of the recording industry into a multinational business. It is first and foremost the record of a life in music, filled with candid portraits of musical figures--Birgit Nilsson, Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti, Kathleen Ferrier, Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, and others--as well as illuminating and often humorous commentary on music and music-making, and the problems of keeping a musical result firmly in mind while coping with rough-and-ready recording studios, recalcitrant unions, difficult scores, and artists ranging from the divinely talented and agreeable to the diabolically self-important. Despite the author's modesty, this book makes it clear that the modern listening audience owes many of its most treasured experiences to John Culshaw's tact, sensitivity, and skill. Putting the Record Straight is a delightful tribute to his life and work." -- the Publishers. "A vivid account of exciting days in the record business. It parades before us many remarkable personalities, especially the artists. John did so much for music." - George Marek. We will bubble-wrap this scarce title to protect the book's corners and ship it in a sturdy box to ensure safe delivery. Books.
