In the boot and shoe industry, the price for the products has risen no faster, if quite as fast, as the price of the raw material. The price of coal likewise showed an upward tendency. This is particularly true in the case of anthracite coal, the control of which is commonly ascribed to the Coal Trust. Here the greatest increase has been in chestnut coal, the wholesale price of which increased from 3. 35 in 1890, to 5. 28 in 1912. Broken egg and stove coal show increases slightly less than this. At the same time, the price of bituminous coal, which is not generally regarded as a trust product, has risen in certain cases more than fifty per cent. 5. The Trusts Have Not Raised Prices Obviously there is little connection between the trusts and rising prices. Popular opinion to the contrary notwithstanding, most of the trusts have played no material part in increasing the cost of living. Even among those trust-made products which have advanced in price there have been no very extreme price increases. As already indicated, there have been general price increases in all forms of products during the past two decades. Taking the trusts as a group, the prices of their products have risen less than the prices of commodities at large. These facts, while relieving the trusts from any responsibility for the increase in the cost of living, do not in any way affect the quite patent fact that some of the trusts have reaped exorbitant profits through the conduct of the industries which they control. They have not increased prices, but neither have they decreased them in proportion to decreasing costs of production.
