In the draft riots of the Civil War, two of the big gangs threw their lot with the police, and found vast delight in socking the heads of draft dodgers who showed inclination to resist when the police came after them. Toward the beginning of the century, the Italian immigration began. The newcomers were a little poorer than the Irish, who had been here for a time, and consequently there was an economic push against the Irish occupation of the lower East Side.
