Naturwissenschaftlich-mythologisches Werk des Züricher Mediziners und Naturforsches Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (1672 - 1733), der im Besonderen durch seine paläontologischen Forschungen und Deutungen hervortrat. Scheuchzer betrachtete aufgefundene Fossilien als Überbleibsel der Sindflut und damit als vergangene Lebewesen und wandte sich damit gegen in seiner Zeit noch gängige Theorien wie Lusus naturae oder Vis plastica, die Versteinerungen als reine Naturwunder interpretierten. In seinem vierbändigen Werk "Physica Sacra, oder Geheiligte Natur-Wissenschaft" (1731 - 1735) versuchte Scheuchzer, biblische Geschehnisse und damit letztendlich die göttliche Existenz durch naturwissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu untermauern. Als Scheuchzers originellstes Werk kann wohl dennoch das wesentlich früher (1708) erschienene "Piscium Querelae et vindiciae" (Klagen und Rechtsansprüche der Fische) gelten; hier läßt er versteinerte Fische vor einem fiktiven Gerichtshof erscheinen und - gegenüber anderslautenden Theorien der Zeit - ihre wahre Natur als ehemalige Lebewesen einfordern; überaus bemerkenswert in ihrer Detailgenauigkeit sind die fünf großformatigen, im Anhang beigehefteten Kupfertafeln.
