In retrospect it has become more and clear that David Smith is one of the great sculptors of the century and the first of the American sculptors to have succeeded in absorbing the achievements of the European tradition in the first half of the century (through a most personal adoption of the principles of Surrealism and Constructivism and a profound appreciation of the welded sculpture of Picasso and Gonzalez) and in channeling it towards the leading achievements of American art, which made its own breakthrough with the artists of the New York School around mid-century. Opportunities in this country to see works by Smith have been extremely few. In the permanent collections, and conspicuous in its solitude, Cubi Vi, 1963,1ca,- 411 has stood in the Billy Rose Sculpture Garden at the Israel Museum since it was donated by Meshulam Riklis and his wife Judith Stein-Riklis, New York, in 1973. Recently, in 1998, it was joined in the Israel Museum collection by Voltrun XII,1"t- 441 as part of the Bequest of Anne Wertheim-Werner, New York.
